Although the Cold War ended decades ago, nuclear weapons still exist in large numbers around the world. Hawking warned that political tensions, misunderstandings, or technological errors could lead to a devastating conflict.
The danger is not only the immediate destruction caused by nuclear explosions. Scientists have also warned about the possibility of “nuclear winter,” a scenario in which smoke and debris from large-scale nuclear explosions block sunlight, drastically lowering global temperatures and disrupting agriculture.
