After blood was found in their home, a formal murder investigation was opened. Nothing came of the investigation, as Godard and his children were still missing. Personal effects started washing ashore: clothing, Yves and Marie-France Godard’s driver’s licenses, and a hammer, among other things.
Investigators theorized Godard killed his wife at their home and took the children onboard the ship, which he planned to sink. Some believed Godard had an accomplice who helped get rid of the family’s personal belongings to make it look like they had died in an accident.
