Before joining the show in 1963, Rush had already begun building his career, including an appearance in Man of a Thousand Faces. His early start in Hollywood was influenced by a chance connection involving James Cagney, which helped open doors for him.

On set, he formed a genuine bond with co-star Ron Howard, who played Opie. Rush later recalled the experience as warm and familial, filled with laughter and camaraderie.

Despite his success, Rush chose to step away from acting while still young, opting for a more private life away from the spotlight. He eventually settled in the San Diego area.
