They argue that the Pope’s utterance was not an indictment of character, but an observation of condition. They point to the deeper, scriptural context of the term. In many spiritual traditions, a wound is the precursor to an opening. It is the site where the existing structure breaks down to allow for something new to emerge. To be wounded is to be in pain, but it is also to be in a state of vulnerability. By labeling the nation as such, the Pope might be highlighting the unique, painful potential for a necessary transformation.
