In 2015, he suffered a  serious illness  from which he recovered to the point of being able to return to first-division football. The club he was playing for at the time of his death is Vojnic, a fourth-division club.

Dynamo reported receiving the news of his death with great sadness and disbelief.

“Nikola will forever remain a part of the Dinamo family: as a talented midfielder, a fighter on the pitch, and a man with a big heart. He played 69 times for the Blues and participated in four league titles and three Champions Cups,” Dinamo wrote on social media.

Red Bull Salzburg also expressed its sadness and condolences to the deceased’s family.
